Overview

The Yakima Bears are a minor league affiliate of the Arizona Diamondbacks. Through their affiliation agreement, the Diamondbacks provide players and coaches to the Bears. The Bears maintain membership in the Northwest League and Minor League Baseball and provide a stadium for the Diamondbacks prospects to play their games. Yakima Bears Baseball is an independent local business.

Ownership

The Bears are owned by Short Season LLC, a limited liability company. There are about 30 investors in the ownership group. Mike McMurray is the president of the team. His wife Laura is a vice president and the chief financial officer. They live in Selah, a city just outside Yakima. The McMurrays are involved in the day to day operations of the team. Mike Ellis, Myron Levin, Josh Weinman and Mike Ormsby are directors of Short Season LLC.

Player and Personnel issues

The Arizona Diamondbacks control all player personnel issues. They scout, draft and sign the players assigned to Yakima. Most of the Bears players come out of the June draft each year. The majority of them played college baseball prior to being drafted in June. Yakima is their first stop in the Diamondbacks system. Some players advance after playing at Missoula in the Pioneer League the previous season. The team also includes free agent international players. These players often come from the Dominican Republic, Venezuela, Mexico and Australia.

The goal of Bears players is to one day play in the major leagues. Moving through the Diamondbacks farm system is similar to climbing the corporate ladder or advancing through grades in school. Once players improve their skills and demonstrate mastery at one level, they are promoted to the next level.

Tryouts

The Yakima Bears do not hold open tryouts prior to the season.

Minor League Classification

Yakima and Missoula are Short Season teams that feature predominantly first year players. The next step is a “Long A” team. South Bend in the Midwest League is the next step. From there players advance to Lancaster in the California League. Both are A teams that play long seasons. They begin play in April and play through August. The next step is Double A in El Paso. The top level in the minor leagues is Triple-A. For Diamondbacks prospects, that takes them to Tucson.

Rules/FAQ

Seats and Ticketing Options:

Q: What's the difference between box seats, bleacher back and general admission?
A: Box seats are our best available seat. They are stadium seats with backs, arms and cupholders. They are closest to the field. Bleacher back seats are aluminum benches with backs and are behind the box seats. They are available on both the first base and third base side and also have cup holders. Both these levels of seating are below the walkway and are reserved/assigned seats. General admission seating is all of the area above the walkway. These are benches without backs and fans with these tickets are welcome to sit anywhere in this area.

Q: Where is handicap seating?
A: Handicap seating is available for all classifications of seating. Box seat tickets are in row 10 of sections E, F and G behind home plate. Bleacher back handicap seats are in sections A and K in the 10th row. General admission handicap seating is on the ground level either on the first base side or along the third base side. There are also ramps at either end of the stadium and an elevator that goes up to the stands.

Q: Where can I buy tickets?
A: Fans can buy tickets in advance at our office downtown located at 8 North 2nd Street, or by calling us at 509.457.5151. You may also purchase tickets online or at the box office at the stadium the night of the game.

Q: What are ticket office hours?
A: Normal office hours are from 9 am to 5 pm. On Sundays when we have a home game, we are open from 10 am to 4 pm. Tickets can be purchased during these hours. Online ticket purchases can be made at any time up until noon of game day.

Q: Do senior citizens, military personnel or children receive discounts?
A: Senior Citizens, military and children all receive a discount for general admission tickets only. Reserved seats are a set price for everyone. We classify children age 3 to 14.
